NBA Commissioner Adam Silver came down hard on Kyrie Irving for linking to a movie filled with antisemitic tropes, and he wasn’t the only one. The Brooklyn Nets suspended Irving for a minimum of five games without pay, Nike suspended their partnership with the outspoken All-Star and Shaquille O’Neal called him an “idiot” on national TV.
Irving’s involvement in spreading antisemetic misinformation should be condemned, especially in a country with rising antisemitism.
But while Irving receives the full brunt of everyone’s outrage, not one prominent figure in NBA circles has said anything about Amazon, the company that actually distributes the movie in question, Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America. Although Irving’s link to the movie is appalling and Amazon is making a profit from it, it seems that Amazon is perfectly content.
Perhaps the NBA’s silence has something to do with their desire to sell a billion dollar streaming rights package, with Amazon being one of the most cashed-up potential suitors. Rumours have also suggested that Bezos will join the elite club of NBA team owners due to the anticipated sale of Phoenix Suns.
Despite the Brooklyn Nets’ and Anti-Defamation League asking Amazon to remove the movie, Amazon seems to only be willing to add a disclaimer to it. Even that is far from certain. Amazon intends to profit from the same film Irving was suspended for mentioning.
How can everyone act like this is okay? Will Kyrie Irving be released after all this drama? Or will his NBA career continue to live on?
