Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma admires the success of NBA superstars as primary ball-handlers. The 27-year old believes he can do the same.
Following the Wizards’ 113-105 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, the six-year player was asked if he felt comfortable as Washington’s No. 1 option.
Multiple NBA betting sites show that the Wizards have 7th-lowest odds of winning the championship in 2023. They have a slim chance of making the playoffs this season, according to some sportsbooks.

“No question I would love to do that, 100%,” Kuzma explained. “I love challenges. Maybe not [39.7%], that’s a little aggressive. I don’t think you can win NBA championships of that nature with that.
That’s a lot. But I have that type of ability to where I can make others better, I can score, I can do a lot of different things.”
Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma feels he’s ready to become the team’s No. 1. Option as primary ball-handler
In the Wizards’ home win over Dallas, the forward scored 36 points, tying his career high with Washington, and Kuzma finished with 11 rebounds, 7 assists and 1 steal. He was also 14-of-26 overall.
Kuzma scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and sank 3 of his shots downtown to give the Wizards a comfortable lead.
In terms of percentage usage, the Wizards guard is correct. So far this season, Phoenix Suns’ Duane Washington Jr. and Philadelphia 76ers’ Jaden Springer lead the NBA in this metric (40%).

Luka Doncic, the Mavericks’ forward, is still ranked 3rd in league overall with a usage rate of 37.9%. Kuzma is the No. 81. His current percentage stands at 24.4%.
Last season, Ahmad Caver was joined by Malik Newman and Joel Embiid. Luka Doncic rounded the top five players in usage percentage. Except for the Mavericks none of their teams made it to the playoffs.
Kuzma’s player efficiency rating of 15.97 is 8th among Wizards players. The forward is currently third in scoring with an average of 18.8 points through 12 games this season.
Kyle Kuzma scores when the ball is in his possession. That’s the bigger picture.
